In re Civil Beat Law Center for the Public Interest

The Law Center objected to several motions to seal filed by Defendants Katherine Kealoha, Gordon Shiraishi, and Minh-Hung Nguyen in an effort to conceal documents filed in connection with motions to dismiss the indictment or suppress evidence in United States v. Katherine P. Kealoha, 17-CR-582 JMS RLP.  The Law Center’s objections were filed under 19-MC-10, 19-MC-11, and 19-MC-13.  The Honorable J. Michael Seabright granted in part and denied in part the various motions to seal on January 24, 2019, and asked the Law Center to identify any remaining concerns in light of the decision.  The Law Center raised a concern about the continued sealing of grand jury transcripts relevant to a motion to dismiss the indictment.  On February 20, 2019, Judge Seabright ordered the grand jury transcripts attached to various motions unsealed.  With one exception to protect a grand jury witness not previously identified by the parties, the transcripts were filed unredacted.
